Carbone Alternatives in 2026

Last updated: 28 September 2026. Prices verified on vendor pricing pages on 28 September 2026, monthly billing.

Carbone is a good tool. It merges JSON into Word, LibreOffice, Excel and PowerPoint templates, outputs PDF or the original Office format, and can run on your own servers from €1,500 a year. Teams usually start looking elsewhere for one of four reasons: business users struggle to maintain Word templates full of tags, usage metered per megabyte makes image heavy documents expensive, the embeddable Studio only arrives on the €159 plan, or a security review asks for a certification Carbone does not hold yet.

This article compares eight alternatives against the same criteria we use in our PDF generation API roundup: pricing at four volumes, template editor, SDKs and integrations, deployment and rate limits. For a feature by feature comparison of the two, see Carbone vs PDF Generator API.

Short answer: what to use instead of Carbone

To keep Word templates, use Docmosis in the cloud or jsreport and Docxtemplater on your own servers. For the lowest cost Word template SaaS, use DocuGenerate. If business users or your own customers should edit templates visually, or you need ISO 27001 and on premises hosting, use PDF Generator API.

1. PDF Generator API

A hosted template platform with a drag and drop editor you can embed, white labelled, in your own product, so your customers maintain their own templates instead of editing Word files full of tags. ISO 27001:2022 certified, HIPAA and GDPR compliant, with cloud, dedicated and on premises deployment, eight official SDKs, Zapier, Make, n8n and an MCP server. The trade offs: plans start at €8 a month for 50 documents, but at 1,000 documents a month it costs €52 against Carbone’s €29, the embeddable editor needs the Basic plan, there is no permanent free plan, and it does not output Word or Excel files. Try it for 14 days. Best for: SaaS platforms and regulated teams that outgrew Word templates.

2. Docmosis

The alternative closest to how Carbone works: templates are written in Word or LibreOffice with merge fields, then filled from JSON through a REST API. Docmosis Cloud runs in US, EU and Australian regions from $49 a month, and Tornado is a self hosted engine sold as a perpetual licence from $3,795. Best for: teams that want to keep their Word templates and change little else.

3. DocuGenerate

A hosted API that fills Word templates and returns PDF. Pricing starts at $19 a month for 500 documents and $199 for 10,000, with a free plan of 20 documents. It connects to Zapier, Make, n8n, Power Apps, Bubble and Xano, and offers EU hosting. It has no self hosted option. Best for: no code teams that like Word templates and want a low bill.

4. Docxtemplater

A JavaScript library, not a hosted API, that fills Word, PowerPoint and Excel templates. The open source core handles tags, conditions and loops; paid modules for images, HTML, tables and charts cost from €500 to €9,000 a year with unlimited documents. It does not produce PDF itself, so you add LibreOffice or a conversion service. Best for: Node developers who want Office output with no data leaving their stack.

5. jsreport

A self hosted reporting server that renders HTML, Word and Excel templates to PDF. It is free up to five templates, and an unlimited single instance licence costs $395 a year, with no per document charge. You run and scale it yourself. Best for: developers who want Carbone’s on premises economics with HTML templates.

6. PDFMonkey

An EU hosted service built on HTML and Liquid templates plus a visual builder, from €5 a month for 300 documents and €15 for 3,000. It holds no SOC 2 or ISO certification and has no embeddable editor. Best for: small teams willing to move from Word templates to HTML for a lower price. PDFMonkey vs PDF Generator API.

7. Typsetter

A hosted API on the Typst engine, with a visual editor or Typst code. At $29 a month for 3,000 PDFs and $499 for 200,000, it is the cheapest template API per document in our comparison, with published rate limits and hosting in Germany. It is young, has only a Node.js SDK so far, and holds no certifications. Best for: high volume developers who can adopt a new template language.

8. APITemplate.io

A PDF and image API with a visual editor and HTML templates, hosted in Frankfurt, US East, Singapore and Australia, with a completed SOC 2 Type II audit. $24 a month for 3,000 PDFs and $89 for 12,000. No self hosted option and no embeddable editor. Best for: teams that need regional data residency and a SOC 2 report. APITemplate.io vs PDF Generator API.

On price alone Carbone is hard to beat at high volume, and the self hosted libraries are cheaper still once you ignore the cost of running them. The reasons to move are rarely the invoice. They are who maintains the templates, and what the security questionnaire asks for.
